K-Tip vs. Invisible Bead Extensions

Two premium, no-damage methods. Here is how to tell which one is yours.

Both keratin tip and Invisible Bead Extensions are gentle, high-end ways to add length and fullness, and we do both at Lost Sheep. They are not the same thing, though, and the right one depends entirely on your hair and what you are after. The short version: IBE builds volume across a row, and keratin tips build density strand by strand. Here is the honest difference.

The short version

If you want fullness and length with a fast, seamless finish, Invisible Bead Extensions are usually the answer. They are a hand-tied weft that lays volume across a row, with zero tension on your scalp. If you want detail, want to fill in fine areas, frame your face, or add length exactly where you want it, keratin tips give you that control because every single strand is placed by hand. Neither damages your hair when it is installed and cared for properly. They are just built for different goals.

What Invisible Bead Extensions are

IBE is a hand-tied weft method. A foundation row of tiny, silicone-lined beads is hand-placed along your scalp, and a weft of hair is stitched onto that row. There is no tape, no glue, and no heat. The weight is carried across the whole row instead of pulling on any one strand, which is why IBE is considered one of the gentlest methods available. The beads sit flat and stay hidden under your natural part, so you can wear your hair up, work out, and swim with nothing showing. With regular move-ups, a single set of hair lasts roughly six to twelve months. You can read the full method on our Invisible Bead Extensions page.

What keratin tip (Pearl Bonding) extensions are

Keratin tips are individual strands, each pre-tipped with a small bead of Italian gel. We gently warm that bond and attach it to your own hair one strand at a time. The bond is shaped like a tiny pearl, which is why it is also called Pearl Bonding, and it lies flat against your scalp. Because each strand is hand-placed, keratin tips are the most detailed, customizable method we offer. You can build coverage in a thin spot, frame your face, or add length without a continuous weft. A full install is done in a single day, and you plan on move-ups every three to five months. The full method lives on our keratin tip extensions page.

So which one is right for you?

It comes down to your goal, and honestly to your hair in the chair, which is exactly what the consultation is for.

  • Choose IBE if your goal is overall volume and fullness, you want it in as few rows as possible, and you love the idea of total styling freedom from day one.
  • Choose keratin tips if you want fine-tuned detail, have areas that need targeted density, want to frame your face, or want length placed exactly where you want it.
  • Either way, both protect your natural hair when installed and maintained correctly, both are color-matched to you in-salon, and both start with a consultation. Some clients even wear a bit of both.

Cost and upkeep

At Lost Sheep, IBE install labor is priced per row (from $150) and keratin install is priced per hour (from $85). The cost of the hair and wefts is quoted separately at your consultation, because it depends on your length, color, and how much hair your goal needs. Both methods reuse your hair across move-ups, so you are refreshing rather than starting over each time. You can see the full breakdown on our hair extensions page.

Common questions

Which lasts longer, keratin tips or IBE?
With proper care, a set of IBE hair lasts roughly six to twelve months, re-tied up to your roots at each move-up. Keratin tips move up every three to five months, and a single set of strands can often be reused across several move-ups before you invest in new hair.
Which one is gentler on my hair?
Both are designed to protect your natural hair. IBE carries the weight across a beaded row with no heat, glue, or pulling. Keratin tips follow the manufacturer's heat and tension guidelines exactly and are removed carefully at every move-up. Done correctly, neither should damage your hair.
Can I switch from one method to the other later?
Yes. Your stylist can transition you between methods over time as your hair or your goals change. We talk it through at your move-up or a fresh consultation.
How much do they cost, and how do I decide?
Both start with a consultation so we can look at your hair in person. At Lost Sheep, IBE install labor is priced per row (from $150) and keratin install is priced per hour (from $85). The hair and wefts are quoted separately, because they depend on your length, color, and how much hair your goal needs. You can book online or call or text the salon at 412-668-5338.
